Random Notes - Flushing Toilets
In a discussion we had with Peter, one of our friends from Rome, he remarked about how hard it was to flush toilets in Rome. What he meant was that in the US there is a just a few `handles' that you have on a toilet and they are almost always on the water tank. In Rome the flushing mechanisms are in many different locations and are different kinds. For some reason the water tanks are located all over the place and sometimes they are in the walls. The buttons/handles to flush are not always located near the tanks. Sometimes it does take a while to find the location or the flush thing.
The answer is yes - I took my camera into the bathroom on many occasions to photograph the toilet. Once I had to open the door and step outside to get a full photo and a woman walked in while I was in the middle of taking the picture. I just walked out without saying anything.
Photo: Toilet 1: The button is located on the wall to the left of the toilet. The toilet has no seat.
Photo: Toilet 2: The flush mechanism is on top of the tank located on top of the toilet. There are normally two buttons - one for the `pee' flush and one for the `poop' flush. Why don't we have a `pee' and `poop' button in the US? Since there are many more opportunities (in a house that does not observe the `if it is yellow, let it mellow, if it is brown, flush it down' rule) to `pee' flush than `poop' flush it seems like a no brainer and ecologically sound to have two types of flushes.
Photo: Toilet 3: The flush mechanism here is a small button located on the top of the vertical pipe.
Photo: Toilet 4: The button is located on the wall.
Photo: Toilet 5: Here the button is large and located on the wall to the left of the toilet. This sign translates as `drain'.
Photo: Toilet 6: There is a little button on the bottom of the water tank that you have to pull down to flush this toilet. If you are a short person it may be hard to reach.
Photo: Toilet 7: This one has the `pee' and poop' buttons on the wall.
